"The Inspiring Story of Carrie Winder McGavock, the Lady of Historic
Carnton Plantation"
In a time when most of us are
seeking to better understand our role as women today, Robert Hicks will speak about the
life of an exemplary woman, Carrie Winder McGavock. Her incredible story offers
direction to the modern woman through the example of her life and her service to her
community and mankind. Robert Hicks is a citizen-advocate of historic preservation
and serves on the board of Carnton Plantation as well as Tennessee State Museum and
Williamson County Historical Society.

"Women in Voluntary Organizations -- a Forgotten Piece of Nashville's
HIstory"
featuring Carole Bucy
Professor and Chair of the History Department at Volunteer State Community College
Among the achievements of women is
their historic role in creating voluntary organizations. Carole Bucy, a noted public
historian, who enjoys sharing her enthusiasm and knowledge of women's history, returns
this year to inform and entertain members about Tennessee history. Join her this
year as she provides historical insight into Ann Rodgers Grundy (first Sunday Schools),
the Protestant Orphans Society, Civil War Societies, YWCA, Fannie Battle Home, Martha
O'Bryan, Junior League of Nashville, and Tennessee Equal Suffrage League, to name a few.

"Intercultural Communication"
After this fast paced and
interactive workshop, participants will feel more comfortable reaching out to others who
come from different cultures. By understanding differences in speech, manners, body
language, and customs of individuals who come from different cultures, we can begin to
build bridges of understanding by practicing strategies for effective communication and
interaction based on respect and sensitivity. Facilitated by Patricia Paiva,
intercultural communication expert, The National Conference for Community and Justice
(NJJC) board member, and owner of Aurora Bakery, and Joyce Lavery, Executive Director of
the NJJC.
