ABUSE AND NEGLECT


CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates)

Trained volunteers advocate for the needs and best interests of children who have come to the attention of the court system as a result of abuse or neglect. Volunteers, who are supervised and trained by highly skilled staff to address the issues and concerns of these children, provide all of the services. Volunteer caseworkers and staff work together to find these children safe, permanent homes as soon as possible and ensure they are not abused again.

Exchange Club Family Center (Child Abuse Prevention)
Conveniently located on Thompson Lane, near I-65, this agency works hard to strengthen relationships within families at-risk for child abuse and neglect.  Volunteers can participate in a wide range of roles, including Fundraising Event Chair, Parent Educator, Moms/Children Playgroup Mentor, Parent/Child Playtime Facilitator, and Children's Self-Esteem Class Educator. Volunteers can choose from weekday, evening, or weekend opportunities, in 2-, 4-, or 6-hour increments.  Childcare is available from highly trained staff and volunteers.  Your infant/toddler children are encouraged to participate with you in the Moms/Children Playgroup on Tuesday mornings.

Family & Children Services
Addresses the mental health and related needs of the Middle Tennessee community.   Services include:  Office-Based Counseling, Outreach Counseling, the Center for Adoption, Davidson County Relative Caregivers Program, and LifeWork Productions.   Services are currently available at 5 office locations, 7 inner-city schools and neighborhoods, as well as 23 surrounding counties where services are available to Tennessee Families First Program participants.

Our Kids
Provides medical and psychological evaluations and support for children who may have been sexually abused or physically abused or suffer from neglect.

Rape and Sexual Abuse Center
The only regional organization dedicated exclusively to serving sexual assault victims and their families. Over half the clients seen are children who have been sexually abused.

YWCA Domestic Violence Program
Offering services to domestic violence victims to assist them in realizing their full potential. A holistic approach to service delivery, including the services of a nurse practitioner so that women and children will receive a full array of services within the safety of the shelter, to serve the immediate needs of the women and children and through education help them to build a more solid foundation for their future.

CHILDREN AND FAMILIES AT RISK


Dede Wallace Center
(affiliate of Centerstone Community Mental Health Center)
Provides basic and innovative, behavioral health care in the Nashville area to meet the needs of individuals and families in crisis from young abused children in therapeutic preschool to troubled adolescents to senior citizens suffering from depression.

Girl Scout Council of Cumberland Valley
An intensive and progressive Girls Scout troop program designed to prepare and empower girls from public housing communities for capable and responsible adulthood

Magdalene
A two-year residential program for women coming out of correctional institutions who have a significant history of prostitution and chemical dependency. The program provides residents access and financial support for alcohol, drug and mental health treatment, education, employment, transportation and upon discharge, secure and permanent housing.

Nashville's Table
Middle Tennessee's only prepared and perishable food rescue program which harvests excess food from area establishments and distributes it, at no cost, to agencies serving hungry, needy and homeless populations.

Oasis Center
Provides prevention, early intervention and crisis services to teens and families. Programs are Crisis Services, Community-Based Counseling, Transitional Living, Educational Services and Youth leadership Development.

Junior League Child Care Center at Red Shield Family Initiative (RSFI)
A day care center for 56 infants and children under three years old founded by the Junior League and located at RSFI which is a major collaborative effort

Renewal House
A residential recovery community for addicted mothers and their children. It fosters healing, resiliency and continuing recovery to enhance family health.

Second Harvest Food Bank
Feeding hungry people in Middle Tennessee through several programs while reducing food waste through an efficient system of collection and distribution. Kid's Cafe is one of many programs providing access to a nutritious evening meal in a safe environment to all school age and younger children in the "at risk" population of Metro Nashville.

YMCA Community Action Project (YCAP)
Encouraging academic success, school attendance, pregnancy prevention, and a drug-free lifestyle by providing long-term intervention to "at-risk" girls in the Nashville area.

Frist Center
Provides a dynamic public facility for all Nashvillians that will stimulate and nourish their appreciation, understanding, and creativity in the visual arts through a wide range of esthetically significant, educational, and entertaining programs for all ages.

Nashville Public Library
The Nashville Public Library is committed to extending the benefits and joys of reading, lifelong learning and discovery to all people through collections and services.

Reading is FUNdamental (RIF)
A national program founded in 1966 and designed to motivate children to read. Volunteers go to low-income schools to read and give new quality books to children and grades 2-4.

RSVP/Senior Citizens, Inc.
Provides group and individual activities and services to support an independent lifestyle and foster dignity and self-worth to senior adults.  The Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) project provides seniors 55+ with opportunities to tutor and mentor children in grades K-4 one session or more per week in reading, language, spelling, and comprehension skills.  Seniors not only provide tutoring assistance, but they also provide children with opportunities to learn and practice social skills, receive one-on-one attention, and interact with positive adult role models.

HEALTH


Alive Hospice

Provides compassionate end of life care, grief support, and education to patients, their families, and the community.  Alive Hospice serves terminally ill patients and their families through comprehensive hospice care programs, including facility-based care and educational services.  They also provide training related to life-threatening illnesses and grief to both individuals and groups.  Their newly opened 30-bed facility includes a pediatric care and child bereavement program.  After completing a volunteer training session, individuals can provide support as patient care volunteers in either client homes or at the new Residence facility.  Other volunteer opportunities include helping staff at the children's activity centers or providing critical support to the Special Events staff.

First Steps
Program provides educational services for children with disabilities in their homes and in child care centers to improve the quality of care and improve learning for young children.

High Hopes
A therapeutic pre-school and support facility for special needs children ages 18 months to 6 years and their families. Children are encouraged to achieve their highest potential despite difficulties with speech, language, physical challenges and/or developmental delays.

Interfaith Dental Clinic
Restores, improves, and protects the oral health of uninsured low-income, employed families in the greater Nashville area through access to affordable quality dental care, prevention services and education.  Volunteer opportunities include:  Oral Health Educator, who contacts local schools and non-profit agencies to schedule oral hygiene seminars.

Ronald McDonald House
Provides a home away from home for families with critically ill children receiving inpatient or outpatient medical treatment at a Nashville area hospital.

Saddle-Up!
A therapeutic horseback program specifically designed for children who are physically and mentally challenged. Riders experience increased balance, muscle control, strength, concentration, patience and discipline. All riders benefit from having a positive riding experience with a horse.

Siloam Family Health Center
A primary medical clinic, staffed by volunteers, that provides affordable, high-quality health care to uninsured, under-insured, or those that may have insurance, but are unable to access benefits because of language barriers.  Care includes acutely and chronically ill patient care, as well as disease prevention and health promotion and education.

Susan Gray School for Children
An early intervention and early childhood program serving children from birth to age five, who have developmental delays and/or disabilities, or who are at-risk for delays in their development.

Provides treatment and assessment services to children with speech, language, hearing and motor disorders.

Vanderbilt Children's Hospital and Vanderbilt University Medical Center
Vanderbilt University Medical Center is a teaching hospital with innovative medical units. Children's Hospital provides care for children throughout the region. Houses the Junior League Home and other Junior League programs.

VOLUNTARISM AND QUALITY OF LIFE


Nashville Children's Theatre

Introduces children, teachers, and parents to the magic of live theatre.  The   Theatre's ensemble of professional artists strive to make live theatre a vital part of the childhood experience.  Volunteers are needed to serve as ushers during performances, to represent NCT at community fairs and neighborhood events, as well as to get involved with various fund-raising activities.

National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ)
A human relations organization dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry, and racism in America by empowering leaders to transform communities to be more inclusive and just.   Volunteer opportunities include co-presenting with classroom teachers a curriculum which teaches young children how to resolve conflicts with positive communication; assisting in an Art & Essay Contest; Helping to prepare materials for the 8-day Camp Anytown or acting as a camp advisor.  Fundraising, publicity, and general office support opportunities are also available.

St. Luke's Community House
Helps low and very low income families achieve their potential and prevent problems that threaten the stability of families and the community by offering childcare, mobile meals, senior activities, emergency food, toy store, tax preparation and a variety of programs and services for those families who either live or work in west Nashville.
